Healthy food

Delicious and healthy !

A healthy mind in a healthy body. That is something we all go for. And bread surely is part of the deal.

Because contains so many important nutritious substances that it belongs to be presented every day, even 3 times a day. Something they understood a long time ago in Southern Europe, where bread is served at every dish.

Respecting healthy nutrional habits is something you have to decide, but remember that these healthy habits improve you daily functioning. But what is healthy food ? And how much bread do we really need ?

Food triangle

For a healthy and well balanced nutritional pattern, the food triangle is the best base. In addition to water, fruit & vegetables, dairy products, meat and fish and off course exercise, there is an important group of cereals.

Cereals and potatoes provides us with carbo-hydrates, vegetable proteines, vitamines, minerals and food fibres. Necessary for a well functioning of our body. It is therefore necessary to eat cereals every day.

Ideally you should get

  • minimum 55 % of your energy need by carbo-hydrates (bread, pasta) and
  • approximaterly 10 to 15 % by proteines.

Bread is therefore an interesting nutrition because it contains carbo-hydrates as well as proteines.

Daily, according to the age, one should eat.

  • 1 till 4 years: 1 to 3 slices
  • 4 till 12 years: 3 to 5 slices
  • 12 till 20 years: 5 to 7 slices
  • 20 till 50 years: 5 to 7 slices
  • 50 till 70 years: 4 to 6 slices
  • 70+: 3 tot 7 slices

Variation in your nutrition is very important. It ensures that you have all the necessary substances and it avoid an monotonous feeding pattern. A non issue with bread : the choice is so wide with white, brown, multicereals, wholemeal, bran, ... even sprinkle with seeds. You can choose between loafs, small rolls such as pistolets, piccolos, sandwiches, ... and other regional specialities.

Nutritive fibres

You eat bread on a regular basis ? Perfect, because bread is full of nutritive fibre. Minimum 30 grammes of fibres a day, that is what we need for a perfect functioning of our body.

But what are fibres ?

Nutritive fibres is the name for indigestible substances from vegetable food-stuff. Indigestible, but with an majour function for the intestines. Crucial for a good functioning of these intestines and a good transit.

Since recently, we know that enough nitritive fibres reduces the risks for cardio-vascular diseases.

Nutrition rich in fibres gives you a better saturated feeling. By chewing the food, extra saliva and gastric juices are produced. When these substances mingle with the nutrition, the fibres will swell as a sponge. This way the fibres will take more place in the stomach and this reduces you hungy feeling. You even absorbe less calories.

What an effect : You can more ealisy stay at your weight and create an ideal harmony for your body.

A little comparison :
A slice of wholemeal bread has 3 grammes of nutritive fibre. A spoon of wheat has 4 grammes and 100g of apple has 3 grammes.

Ioded salt

There is always some salt in bread. Which is good for its taste. La Lorraine only uses ioded salt, because iodium is important for the thyroid gland hormone, which regulates the metabolism.

Iodium improves growth. By a shortage of iodium, the thyroid gland has to work more. This can cause an inlargement of this gland. There are some indications that a shortage of iodium could be unfavourable for the IQ of the child.

The salt, used to make bread, contributes to our daily necessary intake of iodium. This differentiates bread from other breakfast products such as muesli, which do not contain iodium.

The bread that we eat, provides us with half of the necessary daily intake. Anyone who eat less than 3 slices of bread a day and who do not use ioded salt in the kitchen could get a shortage of iodium.
